Deixis in Taylor Swift’s Song Lyrics in The Tortured Poets Department Album

The aims of this research are to find out types of deixis, interpret the reference meaning of deixis that are found in the song lyrics of Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department album based on Horn and Ward’s theory (2006) about deixis. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. Five songs from Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department album are utilized as the data, and then they are classified into the types of deixis based on their own criteria. The results showed that types of deixis such as 295 personal deixis words, 53 spatial deixis words, 51 temporal deixis words, 26 social deixis words, and 48 discoursal deixis words are used in the song lyrics of Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department album. In this research, the writer phrposively select 5 out of 10 songs in this album since the scope is too vast. The use of personal deixis indicates the role participant in the song. Moreover, the spatial deixis indicates the place or location of event which is used in the song. In contrast, temporal deixis, it indicates relative time of speech event which is used in the song. Then, social deixis that occurs in four songs on the The Tortured Poets Department album indicates the intimate relation of participants and social status in this song. The last types is discoursal deixis which occurs in all songs in this album refers certain discourse that contains the utterance in the song lyrics as a signal and it’s relation to surrounding text.
