Deixis in Taylor Swift’s Song Lyrics in The Tortured Poets Department Album

The aims of this research are to find out types of deixis, interpret the reference meaning of deixis that are found in the song lyrics of Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department album based on theory about deixis Horn and Ward (2006). The descriptive qualitative method was used to carry out this investigation. Five songs from Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department album are utilized as the data, and they are then classified into different deixis types base on their own criteria. The results revealed that the song lyrics of Taylor Swift's album The Tortured Poets Departments contain a variety of deixis, including 295 personal deixis words, 53 spatial deixis words, 51 temporal deixis words, 26 social deixis words, and 48 discoursal deixis words. In this research, the writer phrposively select 5 out of 10 songs in this album since the scope is too vast. The function of the participant in the song is indicated by the use of personal deixis. The position of the occurrence in the songs is indicated by the spatial deixis. Additionally, the place or location of event in the songs is indicated by the spatial deixis. In contrast, temporal deixis, which is employed in the song, conveys the relative timing of the speech event. Then, social deixis, which appears in four songs on the The Tortured Poets Department album indicate the intimate relationships and social status. Discoursal deixis, the final category, is present in every song on this album and refers to certain discourse that uses the song's lyrics as a signal and its connection to the surrounding text.
