Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of the Group Investigation Learning Model on the ability of seventh-grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah Batudaa to identify the structure and linguistic features of fantasy story texts. The study used a quasi-experimental method with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 20 students selected by total sampling. Data were collected through a multiple-choice ability test that had been tested for validity and reliability. Data analysis used descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test because the data were not normally distributed. The results showed a significant increase in the average score from 45.55 (pretest) to 94.53 (posttest). The Wilcoxon test confirmed that all students experienced an increase (18 positive ranks, 0 negative ranks) with an Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000 (<0.05). The conclusion of this study is that the Group Investigation Learning Model is proven to be effective and significant in improving the ability to identify the structure and linguistic features of fantasy story texts. The model also achieved a more homogeneous distribution of students' abilities. These findings advise teachers to adopt this model as an alternative learning strategy for analytical literary texts.
