Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study discusses the application of thematic learning in primary schools that integrates scientific and contextual approaches to improve students’ learning independence. Thematic learning designed to be active and student-centered encourages independence, creativity, and responsibility in learning. The scientific approach emphasizes systematic stages such as observing, questioning, experimenting, reasoning, and communicating, which help develop critical and creative thinking skills. Meanwhile, the contextual approach connects learning materials to students’ real-life situations, making learning more meaningful and relevant. This research employed library research by analyzing journals, proceedings, and books related to thematic learning, scientific, and contextual approaches. The results show that combining these approaches enhances students’ independence, confidence, discipline, and responsibility. Teachers play an essential role as facilitators to create active and enjoyable learning. However, challenges remain, such as limited resources, varying student abilities, and teacher readiness. Strengthening teacher competence and contextual learning media is key to successful implementation.
